Maldives - travel alert Male

Date: 04.11.2015

Clients should defer non-essential travel to the capital Malé following a decision by the authorities on 4 November to declare a 30-day state of emergency. The measures come amidst the arrest of several senior officials, including vice-president, Ahmed Adheeb, and his associates for their alleged involvement in a 28 September bombing of a speed boat carrying President Abdulla Yameen; Yameen was not injured in the incident. As of late 4 November, the authorities continue to conduct security operations against alleged suspects in the capital.

The state of emergency also follows the 2 November the discovery of an explosive device, which the police were able to defuse, near the Presidential Palace in Malé. A cache of arms was also discovered on 31 October on the remote island of Hinbalhidhoo (Baa Atoll).

While specific details related to the state of emergency are yet to emerge, the decree gives the authorities the power to ban public gatherings, impose curfews, restrict movements of personnel in certain areas, and allows the police to detain individuals more easily. The authorities have clarified that no curfew is in place.
